  • Secrets Behind Carbon

    Activated Carbon

Many customers inquire about the secret to maintaining pristine water parameters, hoping to get a single answer to the puzzle. However, the answer contains many facets of information. • Nitrogen Cycle

    browndiatoms

Why is it important? The most important factor, when setting up a new freshwater/saltwater tank, is learning about what a “cycle” is.  This process (over the course of weeks to months) turns your aquarium into a mature tank that can handle the bio-load (fish waste, algae, microorganisms, detritus, etc.) that you choose to keep.  The […]

If you are deciding to purchase any livestock during these hot summer days, we recommend that you plan accordingly before making your purchase to ensure you get your animals home safely. Here are some tips:

* Get animals home as soon as possible.
* Keep out of direct sunlight.
* Make us your last stop if you are purchasing an animal, do not make any stops after your purchase.
* Make purchases earlier or later in the day when it is cooler.
* Do not leave your animals unattended in your vehicle.

And lastly, hot temperatures can be extremely fatal to your animals, so please be cautious during these 100+ temperature days. Stay cool :)

** Saltwater Spotlight of the Day **

** Saltwater Short Spine Sea Urchin **
The Shortspine Urchin, or Rock Burrowing Urchin, has an oval to round black body covered with hundreds of uniform, reddish-orange spines. Typically found in the back reef, this night-dwelling algae cleaner is known to burrow small niches in carbonatic rocks (dead corals) to hide.
The Shortspine Urchin requires ample hiding places and sufficient room in which to forage in the home aquarium. It generally hides in caves during the day, though it may make a burrow in thick substrates. At night, it comes out to graze on algae, moving about by its suctorial podia that are aligned in five doubled rows.
The aquarium should include large amounts of live rock on which it can graze. Rock formations need to be stable and able to withstand the burrowing movement of the Urchin wedging itself in crevices.
Shortspine Urchins are generally solitary, but will tolerate others of its own kind. It is sensitive to high levels of copper-based medications and will not tolerate high nitrates. Poor water quality will cause it to lose its spines.
If there is insufficient algae for it to graze on, the diet should be supplemented with dried seaweed.

We currently have these in stock and they are on sale for only $11.99!

** Fish Spotlight of the Day **

** Freshwater Senegal Bichir **

The Cuvier Bichir, also called the Senegal Bichir, Gray Bichir, or Dragonfin, is a member of the Polypteridae, or Lobe-Finned Pike family. This species is Captive-Bred, but is endemic to the streams and rivers of Africa. As with other members of the primitive Polypteridae family, the Cuvier Bichir has the unique ability to survive out of water. With a lung-like paired swim bladder and gills to help breathing, the Cuvier Bichir can spend short periods of time on land, but must soon return to its water environment for adequate respiration. This species is brown in color with an elongated snakelike body.
The Cuvier Bichir does best in a large "oddball" aquarium with other large, passive fish. When provided with plenty of open swimming areas, rocks and crevices, the Cuvier Bichir is not usually aggressive toward tank mates. This species is semi-aggressive in the fact that they will swallow any fish or invertebrate that they can fit into their mouth. Be careful in choosing passive tank mates for the Bichir, as they are very passive towards other large fish. Prone to jumping, a tight, well-sealed aquarium lid is required.
A carnivore, Polypterus senegalus can be offered a varied diet of live foods such as worms and shrimp, as well as prepared foods such as krill, pellet food, and freeze-dried tubifex. The Cuvier Bichir may also accept some frozen foods.

We currently have a very nice selection of Freshwater Senegal Bichir at only $6.99!
